Having looked into these issues daily for the last 4 weeks I have learned a lot about transcoding and how it works. If Serviio will work on our servers and transcode we are in business. I intend to ask the question on the QNAP and Serviio forums to see if I can get an answer on this. I have also noted from the Serviio forums that there are other QNAP owners asking questions and installing the service on their NAS instead of Twonky. I have asked on the serviio forum for help here. BLISS! However Serviio at the moment refuses to see any content on my 210. I have also copied a couple of AVI files across and these are served up, transcoded, with no problems.

The Serviio server now sees the files on my local PC drive and serves them up to my TV with no problems. Until then, I'll leave the films on the NAS and copy them to usb stick to watch as required Despite it being yet more spend, I'm considering a Sony bluray player (3/4/570) to go with the Bravia telly as I know this works with my ripped files, or maybe a sony smp-n100 if I can confirm that it works before I open my wallet. I've tried serviio too, but so far no success (TV sees the server but no content) and as you say it defeats the purpose of the low power NAS solution. avi files I'm in no hurry to transcode them again, and I'm sure my family would like me to return from the back room at some time. The idea of converting to MPEG2 is certainly feasible, but after the time I've spend ripping 208 DVDs and Blurays (so far) to. That's fair enough as it's primarily a NAS, not a media player, but it would be nice if QNAP and/or Twonkymedia just came out and said it. I think the "why isn't it supported?" question will most likely be down to the fact that the processors and memory in the smaller/cheaper NAS drives aren't sufficient. both have limitations which are not mentioned anywhere untill after you have parted with your hard earned cash. I can then put the 210 on ebay as it will be redundant I guess we are victims of marketing Hype and going into the process believing that a NAS with a DNLA server will serve up files to a DNLA compliant TV. Pluging this into the USB port on the TV and watching the videos from there. If both these still do not do the business properly I will be formatting a 1TB USB drive with FAT 32 and copying the MPEG2 files onto them.

This uses the NAS as the file location then transcodes the files and sends them to the TV (yet to get the transcoding to work, trial and error reqd to get it up and running) Sort of negates the whole reason for a DNLA streaming NAS as the PC is still on.

(I also keep them all on a portable drive as I travel extensively) 2, I have installed Serviio DNLA media straming server ( ) onto a PC. Not my preferred option due to time taken to convert and the fact that the MPEG2 files are much larger. ideo_free/) and replacing them on the NAS. There are 2 ways forward I am trying at present 1, Converting the AVI files to MPEG2 using Any Video Converter (. The Sony Forums are also littered with posts regarding lack of support for various file types with users getting little or no support. QNAP have still to resond with reasons why transcoding is not supported, They just tell me it isn't.
